One of the priorities of the society’s development is the reproduction of its key values. In this regard, it becomes particularly important to distribute the ideas uniting patriotism and citizenship among the younger generation. The degree of patriotic identity is an important indicator of an individual’s social maturity level and a prerequisite for becoming a citizen of their country. As a social community, youth is diverse in its composition; therefore, the comparative analysis of patriotic ideas and values of its main groups is gaining particular interest. This article reviews the scholarly literature on the theoretical approaches to the study of the patriotism, paying attention to the sociological research on the features of one’s patriotic values in different groups of the young people. The empirical basis of the study includes a comparative survey of patriotic orientations (conducted from March to July 2017) of the representatives of three main groups of the young people living in the South of the Tyumen Region: school students, university students, and young people. The authors show the features of the patriotic mindset of the given youth groups, which can be explained by their age, value orientations, and available social experience. The results show the impact, which some youth’s life aspects (such as their satisfaction with their lives, social position, and plans for the future), have on their political orientation. The authors conclude on the peculiarities of civil and patriotic views among the representatives of major groups of youth, revealing similarities and differences in the process of forming their civil identity.
